Rustic Stool
These
instructions explain how to paint a stool or chair in order to create a
distressed rustic look. This paint effect requires
painting two layers of paint to the
stool.
The base coat will be seen through the top coat as if time has caused
the paint to wear off. The stool used in this example was purchased at
Ikea. You can use any stool but if it has been painted then you will
need to remove the paint with sandpaper. This paint effect technique is
one of many ways to create an old rustic look turning a new piece of
furniture into one that looks like it has been used for many years.
Materials:
- Stool
- Sandpaper
- Acrylic primer (this is the colour that will be seen under your top coat)
- Paintbrush
- White wax candle
- Acrylic paint, in your choice of colour
- Protective finish
Method:
- Sand the stool and
then clean it with a dry cloth.
- Apply a coat of acrylic paint. This colour will be seen under your top coat. Allow to dry.
- Rub a white wax candle randomly on the surface of the stool. Make sure that you wax the areas that usually suffer from wear and tear (such as the edges, corners and areas that you usually stand on). The areas that you have rubbed with wax will later show through your top coat of paint as if the paint has worn off.
- Apply the top coat of acrylic paint to the stool. Allow to dry.
- Sand the stool focusing on the areas to which you applied wax. Remove all dust.
- Apply a protective finish.
