Beach Cake
Materials:
- Cake
Base (either use the base of your choice or follow our recipe)
- Fizz Powder or sherbet (you can either buy this from a candy store or follow our easy recipe)
- Blue
colored Icing /
Frosting (you
can use ready made icing, your favorite recipe or see our recipe)
- Sugar Paste (you can either buy this ready made or follow our recipe)
- Paper umbrellas
- Chocolate pebbles
(optional)
- Gel food colors
Method:
- Decide which colors you are going to use for the beach related items.
- Break off a piece of sugar paste. Dip a toothpick into a gel food color and wipe it onto the piece of sugar paste. The sugar paste is basically an edible sugar dough and should be treated as such. Knead it well until the food color has totally blended into the dough. It often takes some time to achieve this result. The gel food colors are extremely concentrated so each time add a small amount of food coloring until you achieve the desired color. After blending a few colors you will learn exactly how much to add.
- Prepare a few colors according to the above method.
- To make the towel: Break of a piece of colored sugar paste. Roll on a baking sheet until you achieve the desired thickness. The paste should be as thin as possible but thick enough to lift it without it breaking. Cut out a rectangular shape using a sharp knife. You can decorate the towels in various ways: you can cut little cuts on each edge with a sharp knife, you can stick on little shapes cut out of sugar paste in contrasting colors, add little pieces of candy or paint patterns on the towels using a paint brush and a bit of diluted gel food color (the color can be diluted with a small quantity of water).
- To make the sandals – Break off a piece of sugar paste. Roll it into a ball. Squash it into a thin oval shape. Repeat this process forming another flat oval the same size and same color. Choose another color of sugar paste. Break off a small piece and roll it into a thin roll. Cut it into two pieces. Fold each piece into two and place the join on the top of the sandal in the middle. Bring each end of the roll to the other side of the sandal and fold under the shoe. See picture below.

- To make the tube – Break off a piece of sugar paste. Roll it into an even roll. Cut each edge with a sharp knife. Join the ends to form a tube (cutting off the excess in order to form a reasonable size). Choose another color sugar paste. Roll into 3 thin rolls. Attach to the tube and join the pieces under the tube. Place each of the 3 rolls equal distances from each other.
- To make the ball – Make 4 balls in different colors and the same size. Cut each ball into 4 quarters. Take 1 piece of each color and join together again to form a new ball. Each ball will contain 4 different colors.
- To make the bucket – Break off a piece of sugar paste. Roll it in your hands to form a ball. Pinch it to form a cylinder shape. Put your finger or a stick in to form a hole in the bucket.
- To form the spades – Break off a piece of colored sugar paste. Roll it until it is even yet relatively thick. Cut out the shape of the spade using a sharp knife. Using your finger push on the end of the spade to form a dent.
- Bake the cake of your choice. This cake can be made with any cake base. If you do not have a favorite recipe then see our chocolate cake recipe.
- Cover half of the cake with blue colored icing / frosting.
- Cover the other half of the cake with fizz powder (this will be the sand).
- Place the items that you made with sugar paste on the cake.
- Stick the umbrellas in the cake.
Tip:
The cake should not be stored in the fridge. It can be made up to a day before and should be covered well and stored in a cool dry place.
Sugar paste is an edible "sugar dough" and sometimes referred to as RFM, fondant or sugar gum. For more details on how to make it and how to work with it click here.
The items made out of sugar paste can be made in advance and either left to dry (in which case they will harden) or covered (in which case they will still be relatively soft when served).
