Treasure Chest Cakes

These instructions will explain step by step how to make small treasure chest cakes even if you can't bake and  without purchasing special cake pans or equipment. Treasure chest cakes are perfect for  a birthday party with a pirate theme. Each child gets his or her own small cake.

Treasure chest cakes

    Materials:

  • 2 small rectangular cakes (you can use bought cakes, any cake recipe or see our easy fail proof chocolate cake recipe)
  • 2 candy necklaces or bracelets
  • A few chocolate coins
  • Candy in the shape of jewels
  • 2 long strips of licorice
  • M&M's or candy buttons (preferably the same color)
  • Icing or frosting (you can use bought frosting, your favorite recipe or use our recipe)

Method:

  1. Bake or buy 2 basic cakes in English cake pans (oblong pans). You can also use small individual bread loaf tins.
  2. Cut the cake up into thick rectangles the same size.
  3. Cover a rectangle with brown colored frosting (icing) or any color of your choice. Do this on the working surface so as not to dirty the serving dish. Once you have completed this stage move the cake to the serving dish.
  4. Cover another rectangle with frosting. Do not move it to the serving dish yet.
  5. Arrange the candy so that it is falling out of the front side of the first rectangle.
  6. Move the second piece of cake on top of the first cake so that the longer sides (i.e. the back of the cakes) are touching each other.
  7. Place the licorice strips along the cakes (see picture above). Put the candy buttons along the licorice strips and on either side.

Tips:

This birthday cake is great for a pirate themed birthday party.

Are you having a pirate birthday party theme? Here are some additional ideas for the party:

Pirate Invitations -  Design the invitation like a treasure map. Rub it with coffee to give it an aged appearance and then burn the edges. Either roll each invitation up and tie it with ribbon or put it in a bottle.

Activity -  Hide small gifts around the party venue. Have a map which shows where each favor is hidden. Distribute the maps and let the children look for the treasure.

Costumes – Ask the children to come dressed as pirates. Make eye patches for everyone by cutting a round piece of felt and attached it to a piece of elastic. Distribute these to the kids.

Pirate Party Favors – Give each child a small box decorated like a treasure box and filled with a candy necklace, gold coins and jeweled shaped candy. You can buy cheap boxes, paint them brown and put ribbons on each side to make them look like treasure boxes.
